When Alfa was founded in 1910, the coat of arms of Milan was adopted as the trademark with the addition of ALFA MILANO. In 1919, the name was changed to ALFA-ROMEO MILANO. Until the end of the war in 1945, the trademark also featured the coat of arms of the House of Savoy in the form of two symbolic sailor's knots. When Alfa won its first world championship title in 1925, a laurel wreath was added around the symbol out of pride. After the Second World War, the two, sometimes even three (then a knot replaced the city name) Savoy knots disappeared. In 1972, the name MILANO was dropped because Alfa Romeo was now also building cars outside of Milan, for example in Pomigliano d'Arco near Naples in southern Italy. At the same time, the hyphen was dropped - the brand name has been written ALFA ROMEO ever since.
