The 1956 Italian Grand Prix took place on September 1st, 1956. This race was about nothing less than deciding the 1956 Drivers' World Championship! On this memorable day, the two rivals JM Fangio and Peter Collins, each in a Ferrari D50, and the third in the group, Jean Behra in a Maserati 250 F, faced each other as the most promising candidates to win the title in Monza, the highest-speed race track in Italy. The course of the race was hard to beat in terms of drama. Many exciting duels and an unprecedented demonstration of human greatness by a driver dominated the scene.
Just before the halfway point of the race, important preliminary decisions were made: Jean Behra, one of the title contenders, retired on lap 22 due to a defective ignition system while in third place. Fangio, who started the race with starting number 22, had to make a pit stop after 30 laps due to a broken steering rod. After repairs, car #22 was handed over to his teammate Eugenio Castellotti to continue driving. Fangio's pit strategy was for him to take over the car from Luigi Musso. However, he ignored the team order. During this phase of complete uncertainty for Fangio and the onset of panic in the Ferrari pit, Peter Collins came in. His actual concern was to have the tires of his D50 checked. But at that moment, racing history was made: in a selfless decision with a previously unprecedented sporting gesture and deference to his much older opponent, Peter Collins decided to hand his car over to Juan-Manuel Fangio.
Completely unexpectedly, Fangio reached the finish line in second place behind winner Stirling Moss in Collins' #26 car. The Formula 1 drivers' championship for the 1956 season was decided in his favor. Fangio thus won his fourth world championship title. For Stirling Moss, the victory in Monza meant the runner-up in the world championship.
